What is the benefits of Omega 3?
Omega-3 fatty acids have become a staple supplement in the consumer market. Most consumers use fish oil as their go-to supplement for omega-3 fatty acids. But what are all the benefits that this fat offers?
Two types of omega-3 fatty acids are found in fish oils, EPA and DHA. These two fatty acids are popular because of how they support heart health. Supplementing with omega-3 fatty acids have shown to do the following:
– Lower overall cholesterol and bad cholesterol (LDL) levels.
– Lower blood triglycerides which is known to put you at risk of heart disease.
– Lower inflammation which is helpful to preventing blood clots.
In addition to its heart health benefits, omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to help with various health issues including arthritis, AHDH, asthma, joint pain, and depression. It also helps with skin, eye health, and brain development.
As mentioned earlier, fish oil is the supplement known for high EPA and DHA content. However, it is not the only supplement that offers these healthy fats. Many brands are coming up with omega-3 fatty acid supplements that are plant based. Many are using algae and chia as omega-3 fatty acids, making it easier for vegans to get the nutrition they need.
It’s also important to mention that the omega-3 fatty acid, ALA, is often overlooked. ALA is an omega-3 fatty acid that is found in nuts and seeds. ALA offers similar benefits to EPA and DHA. Some supplements contain only EPA and DHA, so it may be helpful to get your ALA from your diet or a different omega-3 supplement.
